Altinkum is a popular resort town on the shores of the Aegean sea south west of Turkey situated 200km south of Turkey's third largest city of Izmir and 73km from Kusadasi. The location is between Bodrum and Kusadasi.
The name "Altinkum" translates to "golden sand". The town has three main beeches, the main one (often referred to as the First Beach) stretches from the harbour to a rocky headland with the other two situated either side of the pretty Altinkum Bay. With gentle, sloping sands and calm water, Altinkum is ideal for children (lifeguards watch the beach). Waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and diving are just some of the water sports on offer.
The town boasts dozens of bars, restaurants and little cafés serving cuisine from around the world. Turkish fare is a delicious mix of grilled meats and fish, kebabs and salads. Traditional appetisers, or meze, include stuffed vine leaves, olives, humus and Turkish pastries.
There is also British food available for those that want it from fish and chips to a breakfast fry-up.
Altinkum has a well established nightlife with dozens of bars and discos – including a vast open-air nightclub. The most popular area is based around the harbour and Dolphin Square, here you will find everything from karaoke bars to live music venues.
While Altinkum can be a very lively place after dark, there are still plenty of places to take it easy including more sedate back street bars or family-style restaurants
Altinkum is very popular with both British and Turkish tourists.
Altinkum is 1 hour 30 minutes transfer from Bodrum Airport and 1 hour 45 minutes from Izmir Airport.
